 Basic Photoshop Working > Selections

Creating graphics without selection tools would have been difficult in Adobe Photoshop. It is very difficult to make precise graphic images like square or circle with an Airbrush or a Pencil tool. Selection tools come in handy in such situations. Having been familiar with the different tools in the toolbox, let us now learn about the selection tools in detail. The tools for selection available in the toolbox are the Marquee tool, Lasso tool and the Magic Wand tool. The Marquee tools are named so because they create a visible or an invisible marquee selection area. As we click and drag the tool, a boundary of selection appears that appear a "Marching Ants (Dashed Lines)".

  Rectangular Marquee Tool

The Rectangular Marquee Tool is used for making rectangular and square selection areas. To make a square, hold down the Shift key while dragging the tool. The Marquee Options palette, as shown in the image can be opened by double-clicking on the tool.

  Using Rectangular Marquee Tool

In this exercise we will learn how to draw a square using the Rectangular Marquee Tool on a layer.

Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the toolbox.

Click on the tool.

Press the Shift key, click the left mouse button and drag and release.

  Elliptical Marquee Tool

The Elliptical Marquee Tool is used to select an oval or circular area. Holding the shift key forces the selection to be a perfect circle. In this exercise, we will learn how to draw an ellipse on a layer.

Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Toolbox.

Hold down the left mouse button on the small triangle till the hidden sub menu appears. Click the Elliptical Marquee Tool.

Click and drag the mouse button on the white background and release to draw an Ellipse.
